Position: Policy Research Intern – State Government Landscape Mapping
Location: New Delhi (Hybrid)
Reporting to: Engagement Lead
States play a pivotal role in implementing policies, mobilising finance, and coordinating sectoral transitions. The Climate and Sustainability Initiative (CSI) is conducting a comprehensive state-level landscape mapping exercise to understand the scope, scale, and institutional frameworks of climate and sustainability-related actions across all Indian states and union territories. This internship is part of that effort.
The objective of the Internship: To develop a detailed map of state-level climate action policies, sustainability initiatives, relevant departments, and nodal officers, while also identifying strategic entry points for engagement with state governments.
Scope of Work: The intern will undertake the following responsibilities:
- Desk-Based Research:
- Review official websites, notifications, press releases, State Action Plans on Climate Change (SAPCCs), and budget documents of all Indian states and UTs.
- Identify state-specific climate action initiatives, green missions, EV policies, renewable energy programs, adaptation projects, and other sustainability efforts.
- Policy & Initiative Mapping:
- Document climate-related and sectoral initiatives (energy, transport, agriculture, water, industry, forests, etc.) in each state.
- Note schemes, programs, targets, timelines, and funding mechanisms where available.
- Institutional Mapping:
- Identify state-level nodal departments (e.g., Dept. of Environment, Energy, Planning, Transport).
- List key points of contact or officers handling climate/environment/sustainability portfolios.
- Comparative Analysis:
- Identify progressive states and laggards.
- Map trends, overlaps, best practices, and unique approaches adopted by states.
- Documentation:
- Maintain a structured tracker with state-wise entries including policies, programs, nodal departments, officer contacts, and official links.
- Create state policy snapshots (1-pager or slide per state).
Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Environmental Studies, Public Policy, Development Studies, Sustainability, or related fields.
- Strong research and analytical skills with an eye for detail.
- Familiarity with the Indian climate policy landscape and government structures is preferred.
- Excellent documentation and presentation skills (MS Office/Google Workspace).
- Ability to synthesize large volumes of information into concise, structured formats.
- Self-motivated, organized, and able to work independently.
